Boston Skyline

Boston, Massachusetts
May 25, 2014
Nikon D3100: Tamron 18-270 at 42 mm: ISO 400: f/11: 1/400 sec.
We were walking back to the metro station when we passed this beautiful scene with a big empty green field leading into the Boston skyline.  Unfortunately, the lighting was terrible and I eventually gave up getting a decent image.  As I have been working more in black and white, I decided to give it another try.  I got rid of the big green field of negative space and focused just on the skyline and added a bunch of contrast to make the buildings the focus.  I don't think it is a real special photo, but I am happy to have salvaged something from a scene I really enjoyed in real life.

Red Rock in Black & White

Las Vegas, Nevada
February 27, 2015
Nikon D3100: Tamron 18-270 at 92 mm: ISO 200: f/16: 1/80 sec.
I have been enjoying black and white a lot more lately and thinking back to some of my old photos, this was the first one I thought of because of the great contrast in the different areas of the photo getting hit with light.

Window to the Peak

Zion National Park, Utah
November 4, 2015
Fuji X-T1: Fujinon 18-135 at 38.9 mm; ISO 400: f/13: 1/30 sec.
This is two exposures blended together to capture the rock and the mountain both in focus.  It's a shot I took soon after getting out to hoodoo city while I was scoping out looking for the best place to shoot the sunset.

Hoodoo City

Zion National Park, Utah
November 4, 2011
Fuji X-T1: Fujinon 18-135 at 20.8 mm: ISO 200: f/13: 1/30 sec.
This is a 3-image hdr. It is about 20 minutes before sunset while I was scouting at Hoodoo City.  I loved the foreground and layers leading back to the mountain.

Zion Hoodoo

Zion National Park, Utah
November 4, 2015
Fuji X-T1:Fujinon 18-135 at 21.6 mm: ISO 200: f/16: 1/8 sec.
When we were at Hoodoo City, we got a little color in the sunset.  This was the most prominent hoodoo that was in our area.  I liked the windy trail of water leading into it.

Saguaro Cactus in Black & White

Burro Creek, Arizona
March 29, 2015
Nikon D3100: Tamron 18-270 at 18 mm: ISO 100: f/16: 1/30 sec.
This is another old image that I could never really get excited about the colors.  I like it much better in black and white.

Narrows at Zion

Zion National Park, Utah
November 5, 2015
Fuji X-T1: Fujinon 18-135 at 18 mm: f/18: 3.0 sec.
This was our favorite spot we found in the Narrows.  The light was hitting the back wall creating a nice light around the entire bend in the river and this little pocket of trees added some good contrasting color.

Row of Trees in the Narrows

Zion National Park, Utah
November 5, 2015
Fuji X-T1, Fujinon 18-135 at 18 mm: ISO 200: f/13: 3.0 sec.
Another shot from inside the Narrows.  There was a lot I liked about this scene.  I liked the row of tress lining the river and the sun catching the orange wall and the moss covered wall on the far right.  I wish the trees were more yellow, but overall I am pleased with the composition.

Kolob Terrace Sunset

Zion National Park, Utah
November 4, 2015
Fuji X-T1; Fujinon 18-135 at 38.9 mm: ISO 200: f/16; 1/8 sec.
My first shot in Zion National Park was up Kolob Terrace at a place unofficially called Hoodoo City.  This shot doesn't include any of the hoodoos, but looks beyond them at the mountain and plains.  Unfortunately, we had terrible luck with sunsets and this was the best I experienced while there.  Luckily I was set up because it lasted about 3 minutes was all.

Narrows at Zion

Zion National Park, Utah
November 5, 2015
Fuji X-T1, Fujinon 18-135 at 18 mm: ISO 200: f/18: 3.0 sec.
Last week I was able to attend a photography workshop with the team from Improve Photography.  My first morning I hiked probably 3 miles into the narrows with a small group of about 8-10 other photographers.  We caught great morning light on a few of the bends.  I liked this composition with the solo tree adding some color while the sun illuminated the back wall.  Look forward to many many more photographs from the Zion area in the coming weeks.

Kingston River Sunset

Kingston, Idaho
July 16, 2013
Nikon D3100: Tamron 18-270 at 18 mm: ISO 100: f/14: 10 sec.
Back in 2013, we spent a week at a bed and breakfast on the river outside Kingston.  One night I was treated to a magical stormy sunset.  I used long exposure and was able to get good light, great reflections and awesome skies.  I was without new photos to edit so I pulled this one out and re-edited it to bring out the shadows more.

San Jose del Cabo, Mexico
May 25, 2015
Nikon D3100: Tamron 18-270 at 25 mm: ISO 200: f/9.0: 1/30 sec.
Another little gem of a store off a side street in downtown San Jose del Cabo.  Once again, my wife was inside shopping!  In the meantime, i played with my daughter in the fountain and took some photos.

Indian Beach Black & White

Ecola State Park, Oregon
July 1, 2015
Nikon D3100: Tamron 18-270 at 46 mm: ISO 400: f/10: 1/200 sec.
Indian Beach is a great little location in Ecola State Park just south of Seaside on the Oregon Coast.  I was headed to Ecola Point to catch the sunset and had a half hour to kill so I drove down to Indian Beach.  Luckily, the parking lot is right on the beach.  I took this photo on top of a picnic table just off the parking lot.

Stained Glass at the Provo City Temple

Provo, Utah
September 12, 2015
Nikon D3100: Tamron 18-270 at 42 mm: ISO 100: f/8.0: 1/400 sec.
I loved the old Provo Tabernacle and was sad when it burned down, but the new temple taking its place is pretty awesome.  I love the stained glass against the red bricks.

Mexican Market Shop

San Jose del Cabo, Mexico
May 25, 2015
Nikon D3100: Tamron 18-270 at 65 mm: ISO 200: f/5.0: 1/100 sec.
I found this little gem on a small side street off the downtown square.  I grabbed some photos while my wife was buying things across the street.

El Arco in Black & White

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico
May 24, 2014
Nikon D3100: Tamron 18-270 at 35 mm: ISO 200: f/13: 1/250 sec.
While there was no way to get good light at the arch because you have to take a boat, the texture just screamed for black and white to me.

Mission of San Jose del Cabo Interior

San Jose del Cabo, Mexico
May 25, 2015
Nikon D3100: Tamron 18-270 at 27 mm: ISO 400: f/5.6: 1/160 sec.
I love the highlight/shadow sliders in lightroom.  I never could have made this image without them unless I went HDR.  Since I was without a tripod and wouldn't have wanted to impose on their mass, HDR wouldn't have been an option anyway.

Cattle Roaming in Mexico

San Jose del Cabo, Mexico
May 26, 2015
Nikon D3100: Tamron 18-270 at 27 mm: ISO 100: f/13: 1/125 sec.
Next to our hotel was an estuary and mixed in with the birds were some roaming cattle.  I think its the first time I have seen cows and palm trees.

Coeur d'Alene River

Kingston, Idaho
July 16, 2013
This photograph is a couple years old, but didn't make the cut the first time around.  It comes from our family reunion just north of Kingston, Idaho.  This was me actually setting up and taking test shots for the sunset I was waiting on.  The sunset photographs can be found here, here, here and here.

Downtown Provo

Provo, Utah
September 12, 2015
Nikon D3100: Tamron 18-270 at 18 mm: ISO 100: f/9:1/160 sec.
I have wanted to get out and try some street photography.  Living in Vegas, it should be easy, but I just can't seem to find the time.  So instead, I took to the streets of Provo while we were there.

Super Moon

Las Vegas, Nevada
September 27, 2015
Fuji X-T1: XF18-135 at 122.6 mm: ISO 400: f/5.6:1/1000 sec.
Unfortunately, I missed the blood moon, but I decided to go out in front of my house and at least capture an image of the super moon.

Tillamook Rock Lighthouse Sunset

Ecola State Park, Oregon
July 1, 2015
Nikon D3100: Tamron 18-270 at 270 mm: ISO 100: f/16: 1/25 sec.
This is yet another lighthouse shot from Ecola Point.  The sun was high enough in this shot to turn everything orange.  I did basically nothing in post other than blackening the shadows a little.

Ecola Point B&W

Ecola State Park, Oregon
July 1, 2015
Nikon D3100: Tamron 18-270 at 27 mm: ISO 100: f/18: 1.6 sec.
Another shot of the amazing view from Ecola Point.

Provo River under Bridal Veil Falls Pano

Provo, Utah
September 10, 2015
Nikon D3100: Tamron 18-270 at 38 mm: ISO 100: f/8: .4 sec.
This is a 6 image vertical panorama of the provo river beneath bridal veil falls.  It is basically the same shot as here, but in this one I took the multiple shots to try and preserve more detail and get better resolution.

Provo River

Provo, Utah
September 10, 2015
Nikon D3100: Tamron 18-270 at 23 mm: ISO 100: f/8: 1/5 sec.
This is a shot of the Provo River maybe a mile or two North of Bridal Veil Falls.  It is actually 2 images that were focus stacked in Photoshop to try and get the maximum depth of field.

Bridal Veil Falls

Provo, Utah
September 10, 2015
Nikon D3100: Tamron 18-270 at 32 mm: ISO 100: f/13: 2.6 sec.
This shot was taken just before sunrise.  It's a different view of Bridal Veil Falls.

Provo River below Bridal Veil Falls

Provo, Utah
September 10, 2015
Nikon D3100: Tamron 18-270 at 32 mm: ISO 11: f/16: 1.0 sec.
After the sunrise, I had a little extra time so I drove through the canyon looking for a more unique view.  I liked this shot because it combined the rive and the falls with the fall color, plus you can still see the warm glow of the sun on the mountain side.

Bridal Veil Falls

Provo, Utah
September 10, 2015
Nikon D3100: Tamron 18-270 at 42 mm: ISO 100: f/13: .4 sec.
While we were in Utah, I got up early to get into Provo Canyon before sunrise.  My bad luck stuck yet again as the sunrise was completely uneventful, but the fall colors were just starting to turn so I was able to still get a few images I am happy with.

Bryce Canyon's Natural Bridge

Bryce Canyon, Utah
October 26, 2013
Nikon D3100: Tamron 18-270 at 18 mm: ISO 360: 1/500 sec.: f/11
I am behind on my editing so here is an old post I never published from our day at Bryce Canyon.

March 29, 2015
Nikon D3100: Tamron 18-270 at 270 mm: ISO 100: 1/800 sec.: f/6.3

Peoria, Arizona
March 29, 2015
Nikon D3100: Tamron 18-270 at 270 mm: ISO 100: 1400 sec.: f/6.3
This is an old photo from my spring training trip this year.  Mike Zunino catching bullpen for J.A. Happ if I remember correctly.

Kingston, Idaho
July 16, 2013
Nikon D3100: Tamron 18-270 at 25 mm: ISO 100: f/20: 30 sec.: ND and grad ND filters
Here's a really old photo from our summer trip to Idaho a couple years ago.  It was my first time really experimenting with long exposure and filters.

Red Sunset from Ecola Point

Ecola State Park, Oregon
July 1, 2015
Nikon D3100: Tamron 18-270 at 270 mm: ISO 100: f/18: 1/4 sec.
As the sun got lower on the horizon, the sky shifted from a bright yellow to a rich red.

Ecola Point

Ecola State Park
July 1, 2015
Nikon D3100: Tamron 18-270 at 30 mm: f/16: 1/5 sec.
Another shot of Tillamook Rock.  Not my favorite at all, but I like that it shows how far off the coast the lighthouse is.

Terrible Tilly in Yellow

Ecola State Park, Oregon
July 1, 2015
Nikon D3100: Tamron 18-270 at 270 mm: ISO 100: f/18: 1/8 sec.
Another shot of Tillamook Rock Lighthouse from Ecola Point. This one from right when the sun started to set and cast a bright yellow glow everywhere.

Ecola Point Sunset

Ecola State Park, Oregon
July 1, 2015
Nikon D3100: Tamron 18-270 at 38 mm: ISO 100: f/16: 2.0 sec.
Most of the work I did of this view was playing with panoramas, but this was just a single image.  I pulled a lot of the shadows out of the foreground.  It was pretty late after sunset, but with the longer exposure I still got the left over red glow.

Sunset over Tillamook Rock Lighthouse

Ecola State Park, Oregon
July 1, 2015
Nikon D3100: Tamron 18-270 at 110 mm: ISO 100: f/18: 1/3 sec.
Another shot of the view from Ecola Point of the lighthouse as the last bit of the sun faded past the horizon casting a beautiful red glow over the entire sky.

Tracks to the Strip #2

Las Vegas, Nevada
April 26, 2015
Nikon D3100: Tamron 18-270 at 130 mm: ISO 100: 10 sec.: f/16
Back in April, I discovered this view from the tracks down the street from my house.  For some reason, I had extreme trouble getting the strip in focus that night and was only able to salvage two average shots.  I posted the other one here.

Seaside Bumper Cars

Seaside, Oregon
July 2, 2015
Nikon D3100: Tamron 18-270 at 18 mm: ISO 100: f/3.5: 1/50 sec.
I did a bit of work on this photo becuase I wanted it to have a retro feel.  I removed all clarity and sharpness from the metal floor and roof to get rid of distracting shadows and bright spots.
