Copley Square

Boston, Massachusetts
May 25, 2014
Nikon D3100: Tamron 18-270 at 18 mm: ISO 100: 1/125 sec.: f/5.6
This image shows the John Hancock Tower and Trinity Church from in front of the Boston Public Library.  As you can tell there is quite a bit of distortion in this image with the buildings leaning inward.  I corrected as best I could without losing any of the Hancock tower.  The tower is huge and is famous for killing people when the blue glass fell off the building and hit people below.

Sun star through lone tree

Red Rock Canyon, Nevada
May 10, 2014
Nikon D3100: Tamron 18-270 at 18 mm: ISO 100: 1/320 sec.: f/6.30
This is another shot from my hike up Icebox Canyon.  Hiking back from the canyon I saw this tree coming out of the top of the large boulder.  It looked drastically different coming back then it did going forward so I stopped this time for a few minutes and waited for the exact positioning of the sun I wanted.

Old North Church with Paul Revere Statue

Boston, Massachusetts
May 25, 2014
Nikon D3100: Tamron 18-270 at 42 mm: ISO 400: 1/200 sec.: f/10

As one might expect, traces of Paul Revere were everywhere on the Freedom Trail.  This church is just down the street from his house and it is where the lanterns were hung to signal the British were coming.

Boston State House

Boston, Massachusetts
May 25, 2014
Nikon D3100: Tamron 18-270 at 55 mm: ISO 100: 1/320 sec.: f/9
On a whim, we decided to go to Boston for Memorial Day!  It was beautiful, but we got sick and had a 1 year old tagging along so it was rough at time.  Our first morning, I made my sick wife get out of bed so we could trudge through the Freedom Trail.

Dry Falls in Icebox Canyon

Red Rock Canyon, Nevada
May 10, 2014
Nikon D3100: Tamron 18-270 at 18 mm: ISO 640: 1/15 sec.: f/6.30
Another shot from my hike of Icebox Canyon.  I was surprised when I turned a corner and saw the end of Icebox Canyon as the hike was a lot easier than I had anticipated.  The hike ends at a waterfall, which was unfortunately dry on the day I was there.  You can climb around the waterfall a little and find little pockets of water remaining.  I liked the contrast between the gray and sand colored rock faces down the waterfall.

Cactus and Manzanita

Red Rock Canyon, Nevada
May 10, 2014
Nikon D3100: Tamron 18-270 at 46 mm: ISO 450: 1/60 sec.: f/4.5
Icebox Canyon was loaded with cacti and Pointleaf Manzanita.  I was drawn to both and was excited to get them both in the same shot. I do wish this particular Manzanita displayed the bright red bark most others did.

Icebox Canyon

Red Rock Canyon, Nevada
May 10, 2014
Nikon D3100: Tamron 18-270 at 18 mm: ISO 400: 1/100 sec.: f/9
This shot was made about 30 minutes after sunrise at the point the sun was just starting to enter the mouth of the canyon.  This is the view from just inside the canyon looking back at the mouth.

Desert Wildflower

Red Rock Canyon, Nevada
May 10, 2014
Nikon D3100: Tamron 18-270 at 130 mm: ISO 100: 1/125 sec.: f/8
Many of the flowers were starting to bloom during my hike up Icebox Canyon.  These little white flowers were abundant, but this little one was in the best shape that I saw during the hike.  Flowers aren't usually my thing, but when there's no water around, you use what you have.

Icebox Canyon

Red Rock Canyon, Nevada
May 10, 2014
Nikon D3100: Tamron 18-270 at 18 mm: ISO 280: 1/125 sec.: f/5.6: CPL
I was drawn by this frame with the lines of the rock leading up to the cliffs.  Unfortunately, I didn't take the time to really set up the shot and control the lighting.  The sunrise cast too much light on the rock and really washed it out.  I will hopefully be able to find this rock again next time I do this hike.

Red Rock Viewpoint

Red Rock Canyon, Nevada
May 10, 2014
Nikon D3100: Tamron 18-270 at 21 mm.: ISO 100: 1/10 sec.: f/14: CPL
When I finally got into the park just after 6:00 am, the sunrise was over so I drove the scenic loop trying to decide what hike to take.  Coming to the view point, I decided to hop out for a minute and see what the side lighting was doing for the Western side of the valley.

Sunrise over Joshua Tree

Red Rock Canyon, Nevada
May 10, 2014
Nikon D3100: Tamron 18-270 at 32 mm: ISO 100: 1/5 sec.: f/16: CPL
A week after hiking Turtle Head, I woke up early to get another hike in before the family got up and going.  This would also give me a chance to get a sunrise shot and I had a great location picked out.  I got to the park at 5:30 to find the gates didn't open til 6:00 so I found a Joshua Tree and set up to shoot while I waited for the park to open.
